Celebrity Encounters

CELEBRITY ENCOUNTERS FOR ME,

IS MORE THAN SIMPLY SNAPPING A CROWD SHOT OR A RANDOM PHOTOGRAPH.

Below are photos of many of the very lucky encounters that I have had with some of my favorite and most admired celebrities and artists in all of Rock and Roll. Not just chance encounters or a brief glimpse, but much more – a real opportunity to meet, shake hands, converse and ask a question or two, perhaps take a photo, and of course obtain an autograph.

As a one man shop, and before the invention of the cell phone/camera, taking any photos with celebrities was a difficult task. Sadly, I do not have too many photographs along side any celebrity for about the first 25 years of my in person collecting.

In the world of autograph collecting, for me the obtaining of their signature is only part of what I want to take home. I want the celebrity to know I am a real fan of their music and artistry and, if they are willing, perhaps allow me to ask a genuine question about their career that already has not been answered 1000 times over or can be found with ease on the internet.

I thank each and every artist below for sharing so much of their time with me.

…………………………..and FINALLY:

Live indoor concerts in some capacity or another opened up on or around June 1, 2021
and it was MISSING PERSONS that I went back to go see, 3 times in July of 2021.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

and finally, LAST CONCERT UPDATE:

The return to live stage, indoor/outdoor concerts returned to first the smaller clubs,

then progressively to the larger venues starting May 1, 2021.

FURTHER CONCERT UPDATE:

As of January 2021, CAR CONCERTS began to pop-up in the larger parking lots of concert venues.

Usually tribute bands performing, it was a “return” to live music any way possible.

CONCERT UPDATE:

It’s now past August 8, 2020 and I have not attended any

concert since seeing KISS live at The Forum on March 4, 2020.

It’s been a very long and very departed concert season as venues such as the
Hollywood Bowl and The Greek Theater have closed for the remaining 2020 concert season.

________________________________________________________________

It was at this point the during first week of March 2020,

it all came to a crashing stop!

Due to the world wide outbreak of the Corona virus,

most Meet & Greets were all suspended for many upcoming concerts.

Within the next few weeks, conventions and concerts were being pushed back to

late 2020 with most major concert tours for 2020 postponed and thrown into 2021.

Autographing as we know it was put on a complete hold.

The future of autographing became very uncertain as we would have

to wait and see if and how it would return.

Friday October 12, 2018’s pre-concert Meet & Greet with Lindsey Buckingham
was one of the poorest organized, most rushed, and lacked any real “MEET/GREET”.
I had to “fight” to get these two albums signed that were autographed worse than the pre-signed poster that was part of the package.

He and this bumbling Inspector Clouseau of a photographer, just wanted it over.

An almost complete sour experience.

“THE MOB RULES!!”

Myself and gentle and kind Ted Neeley

at The Hollywood Show on July 28, 2018.

I don’t play that or take part into all this “I’m your greatest fan” or “you have changed my life” stuff. Though meeting many of the celebrities that I have, I have no doubt that many probably have changed my life in some way. It has to have happened. Truly, I have been so incredibly lucky to have met such icons as Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Eric Claption, David Gilmour, Roger Waters and others, that no doubt my life has been made for better somehow I am sure. Through it all over 30+ years, I have always been able to stay a step ahead of my emotions, no matter how fluttering were my butterflies and how much anticipation I was filled with to meet any of them.

When I met Mr. Ted Neeley, all that changed. My desire to meet and chat with this man and to stand next to him and hold his hand, overcame me as never in the years of collecting ever has.  I almost immediately shed tears with such happiness of inner joy at being with and talking to this beautifully gifted man who I have enjoyed in Jesus Christ Superstar since first seeing this film as a very young boy. Was it spiritual because of the role he played or was it magical because he is such a kind, loving, caring and gentle soul? I may not ever have that answer and may never know.

It probably doesn’t really even matter why.

I just know that it was “he” (Ted Neeley) finally after so, so many encounters with others finally got to me. He cracked this ‘ol rigid and stubborn polar bear and out came my love, admiration, respect, …………….and tears for this man.  I was overstruck in a way that has never overtaken me with any other celebrity. Robert Plant couldn’t do that, Elton John didn’t do that, David Bowie I thought would of (but didn’t still), and Bruce Springsteen did not crack me either.

However Ted Neeley did, (and I have no problem with that).

Peter Criss and Stephen Duncan

During the Peter Criss KISS Expo on Saturday January 28th, 2017, the photo that was taken during the Meet and Greet was a blurry mess. Therefore, I asked Peter and his team on Sunday morning January 29th to see about taking another photo.

Peter being always so nice to his fans, allowed me this “quickie” you see here, snapped on Van Ness Avenue just outside the Raleigh Studios at about 11:50am.

PROBABLY THE LAST TIME THAT TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT WILL EVER SIGN FOR ME.

Though Timothy B. Schmit has one of the fullest and most calligraphic signature of any male artist, since about 2000 he has purposely made it very difficult for me to obtain his autograph. Such the case here, at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on January 7, 2017.

Mr. Schmit felt the need to avoid signing his last name on his album for me. Though I was/am happy to have obtained what he did sign (in lieu of nothing), no matter how I try to explain to him that all inscribed items I obtain are never for sale, I even have tickets to his shows (I showed him the tickets), and so I do support his solo career, it still doesn’t change his reluctance to sign anything for me.

Myself and Bruce Springsteen, a man who I have seen in concert more times than any other musician, at the very rare “Meet and Photo Greet” at The Barnes and Noble book store at the Los Angeles Grove, on Monday October 3, 2016. I waited 56.50 hours prior to the signing and was 3rd in line to receive his pre-signed 2016 autobiography, shake his hands, and say (ever so fast) whatever it was that I said to Bruce.

Along the way, I met as well some new and now very dear friends (Sandy and Kim) who
will forever be linked with, for enduring the waiting on the streets for over 2 days all at a chance to meet this incredible man who have provided so much happiness through music for over 40 years.

Max Weinberg #1
Max Weinberg #2

The week of September 30, 2011 in Mission Viejo, and October 6, 2011 in downtown Los Angeles,

I was able to meet, talk to, and obtain several autographs from Max Weinberg.

Though at first Max thought I was an autograph chaser and not a fan at all (and was a bit hesitant to sign any autographs), he soon did believe me that I was indeed a real fan. Max was as charismatic and distinguished as always; humorous, and simply so very interesting to listen to the many stories he told both at his Orange County concert and later at the Grammy Museum. Max is one of the most humble, generous and without a doubt amazingly awesome drummers in rock music. It was very important to me for Max to know I really was a fan of his, and by the end of the second meeting with him that week,

I truly believe he knew how much I enthusiastically do admire him.

This all-star concert featured Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Meisner, David Crosby, Don Henley, Linda Ronstadt, Bernie Leadon and so many others. However, meeting EmmyLou Harris and obtaining her signature was indeed an absolute pleasure.

While waiting in line at Tower Records on October 27, 1994, at an in store signing later that night by Elton John, Gene Simmons pulled up. Gene told the crowd to let him finish shopping and, as promised, stopped and posed for photos and signed autographs before he left.

Four of the most absolutely gifted musicians you can ever have the pleasure of meeting.

Founding member of the rock band “EAGLES”, Bernie Leadon, session drummer Kenny Aronoff and Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, and Honkey Tonker Mickey Gilley. All four of these very talented musicians were at the Universal Amphitheater, “RHYTHM, COUNTRY & BLUES” benefit concert on March 23, 1994. Together as part of the house band that night they rocked on stage and later signed autographs and posed for photos for many of the fans in attendance.

Sammy and I at the Rockline Studios in Sherman Oaks, on March 14, 1994.

What can I say about Sammy Hagar that hasn’t already been said? Sammy is everything that is fun in Rock-n-Roll: Singer, songwriter, guitarist, dancer, prancer, and always very generous to his fans.

POINT ME AT THE SKY

Though no actual members of the band Pink Floyd were on hand for the announcement by their manager Steve O’Rourke stating plans of the upcoming 1994 Tour, their gigantic AIRSHIP landed on the grass of Pasadena’s Brookside Park/The Rose Bowl on Thursday February 3, 1994.

(and  me with album and sharpie not far behind)

Randy invited me backstage, as he had done during several of his concerts I attended.

He has been by far the most generous celebrity within my entire collection.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE PHOTOS IN MY ENTIRE COLLECTION

Upon finishing his Sound and Vision press conference at The Roxy on March 16, 1990,

fans waiting outside to see if they could get yet another photo/autograph as was done inside.
Yes that’s me in the middle of the photo (live action shot).

Not really a “celebrity” of an encounter, but still pretty cool.

KLOS welcomed Pink Floyd in November of 1987 at their old/old studios.
